RAF Typhoon fighter aircraft have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a combined operation on an underground arms cache in Syrian territory used by the IS group, according to the UK Ministry of Defence.

The location, located using intelligence, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the announcement noted, and was positioned in hills just to the north of the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.

"The RAF jets utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a series of access tunnels leading to the depot... initial indications suggest the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no sign of any civilian impact in the attack conducted Saturday night and every plane involved returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

The Islamic State group - referred to as ISIS - established militant control over parts of both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This strike demonstrates British leadership, and determination to work closely with our partners, to eliminate any re-emergence of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary John Healey said.

UK warplanes have performed patrols over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of Islamic State subsequent to its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the authorities noted.

"I want to thank every member of our armed forces who took part in this strike for their skill and their bravery," Healey added. "They were part of numerous UK service members deployed over the holidays. This operation, to remove militants who endanger our security, highlights how our armed forces are always on standby, all year round, keeping Britain secure domestically and strong abroad."

Last December, the US military carried out what it termed a "major assault" against IS targets in Syria, subsequent to an ambush killed two US troops and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The United Nations reports Islamic State still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in Syria and Iraq.
