Federal Reserve Lowers Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The United States monetary authority cut borrowing costs on Wednesday, marking the second rate cut this year during economic turbulence originating from the government closure and trade duties.

Move Arrives at Extraordinary Moment for Federal Reserve

The move to cut the key rate by a quarter point to a span of 4% to 3.75% comes at an extraordinary moment for the central bank. The authority has been under immense pressure to cut rates despite persistent inflation.

Fed Statement Notes Labor Market Shifts

In a statement, the Fed said that the jobless rate had increased but stays modest. “Job gains have slowed,” the statement reads. “Price increases has risen and remains somewhat elevated.”

Government Shutdown Complicates Central Bank’s Task

The continuing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in US history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Collection of important financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as employees at the BLS are on leave during the closure.

Information Shortage Affects Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve usually studies labor statistics to determine labor market conditions, such as the number of new jobs created to the market and the present jobless percentage. The last jobs report was released in early September, before the closure, and provided a relatively bleak overview of the employment scene in August.

The figure of jobs added to the market in the summer month was lower by over 100k since the spring, and unemployment rose to 4.3% – the peak since 2021.

Alternative Reports Indicate Ongoing Slowdown

Though the bureau was scheduled to release last month’s employment data in early October, it halted its publication once the shutdown started. Employment data company a leading payroll processor reported earlier this month that the business segment eliminated 32,000 positions in September, a indication that the job market is still decelerating.

“Both the supply and demand for labor has declined significantly,” central bank head Jerome Powell said earlier this month, a trend he had earlier said stems from immigration and tariff policies.

Price Data Reveals Gradual Increase

Though BLS’s jobs report has been suspended, the agency still issued its inflation report for last month that indicated that prices are going up, albeit gradually. Prices rose 3% over the last year, the highest since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since 2021. The Fed’s target inflation rate is two percent.
