Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Remarks

The English opener Zak Crawley has indicated he was not familiar with statements from skipper Stokes about the team environment not being "weak men".

The all-rounder made this message in several conversations in the wake of his team's defeat in the second Ashes series versus the Australians previously.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where the visitors now face defeat with a match to spare, the captain noted he had let his sentiment to "circulate freely" among the squad.

"I've done all the talking in recent days that I needed to have done," said Stokes.

But, following the opener scored 85 on the penultimate day in Adelaide, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the press with a pinch of salt," he added.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

The captain made the "weak men" observation subsequent to his side were beaten in Brisbane to go two matches behind.

The team afterwards took a break to a Queensland resort between the second and third matches.

Before this match, he said his players had held "raw" talks and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their battle to stay alive in the Ashes battle.

Yet, Crawley asserted the guidance from Stokes and head coach McCullum had remained consistent with their prior three years in leadership.

"It's been extremely upbeat, the same as always," noted the opener. "It's just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with great liberty. We believed we were capable of something special going into this game."

The Hosts Close of Rapid Series Victory

The opener's dismissal on day four came during a decisive triple-strike by Australian off-spinner Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in 20 deliveries – he also bowled Brook and Ben Stokes – left the chasing side 207-6 chasing a notional total of 435.

Consequently, Australia require four wickets on Sunday's last day to move to an unassailable three-nil advantage after three Tests.

Defeat would prolong England's drought in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth successive away Ashes series defeat.

The current battle is set to be decided in only eleven days of cricket – with England losing the first two Tests in rapid time respectively.

The last time 1921, when the Australians completed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been determined more swiftly. Australia have also won in 11 days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"It's disappointing," said Crawley. "We came here to win the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel now."

"There remains plenty to play for and we will certainly approach it with that mindset," he continued.

"It's been difficult. Australia is a formidable side. It was always going to be tough touring here against them. They entered as the front-runners coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Place In Question

Although Crawley's innings in Adelaide probably answers questions about his short-term place in the England team, Pope appears under immense pressure for his spot in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

Pope was out for 17 in England's second innings on day four, extending his poor record versus the old enemy.

Across 16 Ashes innings, Pope has never made a fifty and boasts an average of just 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has played as many times in the top order in the Ashes and returned a poorer average.

But, the opener said any suggestion Pope is under the microscope originates with "you guys" – referring to the journalists – "and not within the team."

"We all know how good of a player he is," added Crawley. "He has had a productive year to be frank."

"He has played several excellent innings. This is talk externally. There is no discussion like that regarding Pope in the camp," he concluded.
