Australia's captain Expected to Feature a Key Part in the Ashes

Pat Cummins bowling

The Australian skipper has secured over 300 dismissals in 71 Test matches with an stellar bowling average.

Australia's chair of selectors the selector has confirmed that captain Pat Cummins will have a crucial role in the forthcoming Ashes series.

Speculation had been growing that the 32-year-old might sit out due to a stress fracture in his back that was still troubling him.

Previous updates from the squad suggested no final decision had been made regarding whether he would play, with the extended contest scheduled to begin on 21 November in Western Australia.

He revealed that Cummins is "building up" and felt positive about his chances of taking part.

"We're aware that the window is narrowing and various factors involved, aside from his injury, but other factors as well," Bailey remarked.

"It's positive. There's strong faith that he will feature a significant role. Hopefully from the opening match. Otherwise, we'll reassess."

Injury History

The captain missed the ODI and T20 games against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals last month after examinations confirmed a stress reaction in his back.

There is a track record of back injuries, with flare-ups in several earlier campaigns forcing him out of several home seasons in four years.

Cummins stated he would be proactive in his approach in his rehabilitation process to secure his spot for the Ashes.

The selector indicated that it was unclear if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his recovery but conceded it was "getting tight" for him to recover fully for the opener.

Contingency Plans

Should Cummins not be fit, veteran batsman Smith will lead the side.

Versatile player Green was withdrawn recently from the ODI lineup for their one-day international series against India as a preventive step because of soreness in his side.

He labeled it as a "small issue and stated that he's scheduled to appear in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "well-prepared to be ready to bowl."

"We put so much time has gone into developing the strategy for him to be available for the opening match as an batting and bowling option," Bailey explained.

"He was only going to play the starting games anyway. How he handles the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, should it hinder progress for a short period, the choice was made to take a cautious route."
