At least 13 people killed and 98 injured in train derailment in Mexico.

A deadly train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and management of the country's major government projects.

The crash took place on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link developed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to establish an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.

“We shall thoroughly investigate what caused this tragedy,” declared the country's president.

The leader reported that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The official noted plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.

Flagship Project of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose term finished the year before. This project was intimately linked to his administration's strategic goals for the southern region.

Another ambitious train initiative from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to kickstart the economic fortunes of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Building Management and Worries

The construction of both railway systems was supervised by the nation's military, marking a significant expansion of its responsibilities in civilian projects. They were built at an fast-tracked rate, defying expectations to be partially inaugurated before the end of that administration.

However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously raised significant questions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This encompasses an earlier collision this month when a train struck a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-fatal derailments.

Calls for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the chief of a key rival party demanded an urgent suspension in the building and running of all such projects.

This pause was proposed while awaiting a full technical review. The party declared that the tragedy "calls for prompt explanations."

In reply, the national leader maintained that the train had been running in total accordance with all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the development and running of these vital projects.
